St Giles Church
History
Whittington Church, which stands on the highest point of the village, was built about the 13th century of red sandstone quarried in Hopwas Wood. The services were taken by the monks who walked over from the Friary, Lichfield. The tower is all that remains of the original building.
After the reformation, the spire was built on to the tower to proclaim to the world the turning to Protestantism. The nave was rebuilt in 1761, and the chancel added in1880. The dedication changed to St. Matthew from 1882 until 1892 then reverted to St. Giles. The parish Registers go back to 1574, with a gap from 1596 to 1667.
