Whittington Countryside Fair
Our Whittington Countryside Fair was held on Saturday 3 September. As in previous years we stuck to our winning formula though with a few added attractions and events.
Together with the Vintage Cars, Falconry Display, Dog and Duck Show and interactive Ferret Show, we had a new attraction, the Jezz Avery’s All New Stunt Show a daring display of stunt driving with different types of vehicle.
The marquee was full to overflowing with over 50 stalls, together with the Produce, Cake Competition and the Flower Competitions. Outside there were many other stalls selling and displaying a variety of goods and items. Attractions included the Thatcher, the Hurdle Maker and Besom Brooms, the Bees, Metal Detector Club, Wood Turner, Pole Lathe Turning and ‘Off Road Vehicles’ on display. The Friends of Staffordshire Regimental Museum paraded in their WW1 uniforms, we had a Chain Saw Demonstration, Shetland Ponies, oh and parrots for further amusement.
For the children we booked the Bungie Jumping, a Giant Slide and Obstacle Course, the Tractor and Trailer Rides, Reach up the Tower, Kiddies Train, Pony Riding, Face Painting and of course the very popular Punch and Judy Shows As in previous years, we had a variety of animals, including Llamas, Ferrets, Ducks, Dogs and Horses.. The Dog Show will be offering the Doggie Assault Obstacle Racing, so bring your dogs along to compete in this event.
There was a licensed bar, a variety of food outlets, a Grand Raffle with lots of prizes and lively music from the ‘Tuesday’s Child’ band. We also welcomed Richard Winterton our local auctioneer. Not only did Richard have a number of interesting items on display but had agreed to give talks throughout the day on the auctioneering business. Highly fascinating, amusing and informative presentations.
Fair entry prices for this year’s event were: Adults £5.00, Concessions £3.00, Family Ticket (2 x adults + 2 x children) £12.00 and children under 5 admitted free of charge. Details of the Flower, Cake and Produce Competitions will be available nearer the time on this website and in the Post Office. To book stalls for next year please contact Cllr Chris Millar, firstname.lastname@example.org or 01543 433189.
The Countryside Fair run by your Parish Council is now in its thirteenth year. Over that period a total approaching £163,000 has been raised including the profits from the Council Summer Ball with over £127,000 already being given in the form of grants to local organisations. This year approximately £13.500.00 was handed over to some 23 village groups at the award’s presentation in April attended by representatives from all the various village organisations.
Throughout the year we have lots of help from the community in planning, organising and running the show on the Day. But your Parish Council is always seeking more help to take on key roles and responsibilities. We had volunteers to man the gates, assist with parking, or help with the setting up on the Friday before the event. Please give me a ring on 01543 432848 if you would like to get involved next year.
